The process is quite arduous and begins with the submission of a self evaluation report outlining how the program meets the requirements. The ABA approves courses at their mid year and annual meetings but first their committee will have to review the application and this usually includes an on site visit. During this visit a number of things are checked and the director of the program is interviewed as are some students and graduate and the materials and facilities are accessed. Once approval has been given the program has to be fully re-approved every seven years.

It should be noted that there are very few ABA approved online paralegal programs. Historically the Association has not approved of correspondence or home study courses and many people feel that online programs fall into this category. Some do but those that offer video based teaching may find that they meet the relevant criteria. It certainly doesn’t hurt to look at the guidelines and find out what standards the courses you are delivering need to meet.
